The 10 Remarkable Benefits of Apples!

Benefits of apples

With the apple season upon us and being lucky enough to have a small apple tree in my back garden I thought it would be a great time to delve into the benefits of apples and finding out what health benefits this delicious and versatile fruit provides.

Apples are a nutritional powerhouse that offer a wide range of health benefits. As the saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and it’s not without reason.

Let’s find out why as I discuss the benefits of apples in detail.

One of the benefits of apples is claimed that it keeps the doctor away.

1. Packed With Nutrients

One of the benefits of apples is that they are a rich source of essential vitamins and minerals.

They contain vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and promotes healthy skin.

Another benefit of apples is that they are also a good source of vitamin A, which is essential for maintaining healthy vision and skin, therefore they can act as a crucial part of a skin care regime.

2. High in Fibre

One of the standout benefits of apples is their high fibre content.

A medium-sized apple contains approximately 4 grams of dietary fibre, which aids in digestion and helps maintain regular bowel movements.

Fiber also contributes to a feeling of fullness, making apples an excellent snack choice for weight management.

3. Promotes Gut Health

Apples contain the fibre pectin which acts as a prebiotic, meaning it feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

Therefore, another benefit of apples is it’s fibre not only aids digestion but also supports a healthy gut microbiome.

A diverse and balanced gut microbiome is crucial for digestive health, reducing symptoms like gas and bloating, however, it is also crucial for overall health and even impacts your mental well-being and immune health.

Read my recent blog on how Social Jetlag can negatively affect your gut health.

4. Weight Management

As mentioned in point 2, one of the key benefits of apples are that they are a great choice for those looking to manage their weight.

The combination of fibre and water content in apples provides a feeling of fullness, helping you control your appetite by helping balance your blood sugar and reduce overall calorie intake.

They are also a very convenient snack option to take to the office or with you on a day out.

Read my blog on tips for weight management.

5. Diabetes Management

The fibre content in apples can help regulate blood sugar levels as mentioned in point 4. It slows down the absorption of sugar, preventing rapid spikes and crashes in blood glucose levels.

This makes apples a smart choice for individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing it.

However, the blood sugar-balancing properties of apples have benefits way beyond those of individuals with diabetes.

Read my blog on how blood sugar balance is important to reduce the symptoms of compromised adrenal gland function.

Another one of the benefits of apples is improving diabetes management.

6. Supports Heart Health

Another one of the benefits of apples is that regular consumption can benefit your cardiovascular system.

The soluble fiber in apples helps lower LDL cholesterol levels (sometimes known as bad cholesterol) by binding to cholesterol particles and removing them from the body.

Potassium, another nutrient found in apples, supports healthy blood pressure levels.

A review found that apples were more consistently associated with a reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease when compared to other fruits and vegetables.

7. Antioxidant Powerhouse

Apples are rich in antioxidants, which help combat free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the body. These antioxidants include vitamin C and various phytochemicals like quercetin and catechin.

A study has shown quercetin can even act as a natural antihistamine in the body, so could be used in the treatment of allergic disorders such as Hayfever.

8. May Help to Prevent Cancer

The antioxidants in apples may offer beneficial effects against various types of cancer.

A study suggests these anti-carcinogenic effects might be due to polyphenols in apples that potentially stop cancerous cells from multiplying.

9. Improve Dental Health

Chewing apples can stimulate saliva production, which helps neutralize acids and reduce the risk of tooth decay.

This dentist explains that one of the benefits of apples is this increase in saliva that rinses out food particles and bits of plaque buildup between your teeth; this helps prevent cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath.

While apples do contain natural sugars, their fibrous texture, and low acidity make them less harmful to your teeth compared to sugary snacks and drinks. Just make sure you avoid apple juices with added sugar!

Another one of the benefits of apples is improving dental health.

10. Easy to Include in Your Diet

One of the biggest benefits of apples is that they are easy to find and require no preparation.

You can buy them from the supermarket or if you are lucky enough like me to have an apple tree in your garden or know someone who does you can enjoy them literally as they fall from the tree!

They’re a convenient snack if you’re on-the-go, a tasty addition to breakfast, or a delightful dessert option.

How Many Apples Per Day Should I Eat?

There isn’t any data on the specific number of apples we should consume daily, to acquire the benefits of apples, despite the saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’.

Though general guidelines from the NHS state that we should consume at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

Variety is the key here, meaning we get lots of different vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and polyphenols into the body (read my blog on the benefits of the papaya fruit here).

With apples being so easy to include in the diet, certainly consuming one a day would be a good starting point for improving the health of the majority of the population.

The benefits of apples are vast.

The benefits of apples are extensive and consuming them is linked to a lower chance of getting many chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Further benefits of apples include; promoting weight loss and supporting our gut microbiome.
